Sigma Phi Epsilon places a premium on making a positive contribution to the Lehigh and Bethlehem communities.  The chapter regularly runs, or takes part in, several community projects throughout the year.  This years community projects include:

The Sigma Phi Epsilon Election for Cancer Research

Now in its 18th year of existence at Lehigh University, the Election fo Cancer Research has helped raise over $500,000 in support of cancer research through donations made to the American Cancer Society.  Last year alone, over $30,000 was raised for the cause. Each year presents new challenges for the election and its candidates, but as always, everyone is very optimistic that this year's election will be a great success. Last year, through the combined efforts of Sigma Phi Epsilon and Collegians against Cancer, Lehigh University was presented with an award for raising the most funds for the American Cancer Society of any school its size in Pennsylvania.

Each organization that takes part chooses a candidate to run in the election, where every one dollar donated is equal to one vote. The candidate has the ultimate responsibility of soliciting donations, and attempting to raise funds by any means possible for their campaign. The campaigning occurs during the month leading up to, and during the election in March. In the past, this has included writing letters to alumni asking for donations, having a restaurant donate some of its proceeds to the campaign on one night, or any number of other activities. The advantage of having so many varied interests across campus participate in the election is that every year there are some quite exciting and creative means of raising money.

During the actual election, voting booths are set up, and the general campus population can vote for candidates by donating money. All of the proceeds from the election are donated to the American Cancer Society, and earmarked specifically for cancer research purposes. The winner of the election and the winning organization receive prizes as thanks for all of their hard work.

It is becoming harder and harder to find someone who has not been personally affected by cancer. Whether it was a friend, a family member, or themselves, who was diagnosed, cancer can have a devastating effect on a person. It is our hope that with everyone's help, the causes of, and the treatment of cancer can be better understood. And that armed with this knowledge our society can bring hope to the hundreds of thousands of people in the country who live with this disease.
